Sunday School

Sunday School for children in grades K-8 is offered Sunday mornings at 9:30am. Youth in grades 9-12 may attend the Youth Bible study.

From Our Sunday School Superintendent:

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Sometimes it is easy to under-estimate the importance of Sunday School. It is only an hour a week. Many of our Sunday School teachers work with a specific group of kids for their entire Sunday School career which can be ten years or more. Over time, you really see how those hours add up. Sunday School lessons are on a three year rotation. Kids will hear each of those Bible stories three to four times during their Sunday School education if they have good attendance. If their attendance is spotty, it is easy to have large gaps in their Bible knowledge. Few of our children attend parochial School. For most of them, Sunday School is the majority of their Christian education until they are old enough to begin confirmation. When the kids get to confirmation, you can really tell which children have a solid Bible knowledge to build their faith upon. I'm sure we would all like our children to have that advantage.

Also important are the relationships children develop in Sunday School. Not only is this an excellent opportunity to form a Christian peer group, but this is a wonderful time to form a bond with other Christian adults. These relationships are very important as our children mature to adulthood and have to make decisions about what kind of person they want to be. Peggy Andrews and my husband, Jeff , recently chaperoned a group of seven Junior Youth to the youth gathering at Concordia University in Ann Arbor . Jeff was really struck by what a nice group of 7 th and 8 th graders these kids were. Let's face it, we don't always think of junior high kids as particularly "nice," but he was struck at seeing hundreds of nice, respectful kids, putting their faith into action.  This is no accident. These kids have had many positive Christian experiences leading up to this event.

As parents, we are responsible for our children's physical, emotional, social and spiritual health and development. In our busy lives, it is often easy to attend Sunday School when it is convenient. Few of us would take that attitude about doctor's appointments or regular School. Let us remember what is at stake, and strive to make Sunday School a priority in our children's lives. The benefits will last for eternity.

"Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word of Christ."  Romans 10:17 NIV.
